About Me

I love to learn, to iterate, and to collaborate.

Disclaimer: the comically ENORMOUS names above players’ heads predate my UI overhaul of VR Champions. Prior to that MassVR paid virtually no mind to UI as they had/have no UI artist.

You can call me Berto!

I currently work as a Region Director at Obsidian Entertainment, helping to bring the world of Eora to life in Avowed. Prior to joining Obsidian, I spent 4 years at MassVR, where I led game and level design and pushed the cutting edge of arena-scale VR—releasing two successful titles in VR Champions and Hallow Realm, creating post-release content for them both, and working on numerous (unfortunately) shelved projects.

I graduated from Miami University in 2018 with a degree in Interactive Media Studies, having focused on game design and graphic design. The bulk of my professional experience has taken place in games—at Obsidian on RPGs and at MassVR on multiplayer VR—but I also have professional experience as a software engineer and a graphic designer. This diversity of roles has only helped me thrive more in highly interdisciplinary team environments.

I am a Cuban-American who grew up in New Jersey and Massachusetts, went to college in Ohio, interned in Silicon Valley, moved to Chicago to start a career, and later moved to Southern California to bring that career even further. I love to meet people from all cultures and backgrounds to share ideas and creativity. I live through my work—nothing brings me more happiness or joy than to see that something I created brightened someone’s day. From a very early age I started designing video game levels and sharing them with others online (shoutout to Atmosphir), discovering the value of feedback and criticism and the joy and reward that came from iteration and refinement. I can stand behind everything I have made while still recognizing my own faults, mistakes, and missteps—and striving to remedy them.

The bulk of my free time is taken up by what I’ve loved my whole life—playing videogames, often with friends online. But I also greatly enjoy reading Sci-Fi novels (check out the Three-Body Problem Trilogy and Seveneves by the legendary Neil Stephenson); listening to podcasts about physics, AI, history, politics, culture, and fashion design; jamming out to an eclectic mix of music (Daft Punk; The Black Keys; Tame Impala; Depeche Mode; Tyler, The Creator; Cage The Elephant; Sturgill Simpson; Mitski; and everything in between); capturing quality photos with my smartphone (@bertoritger on Instagram); hitting the waves on my skimboard; and playing an excessively mediocre game of golf.

I hope to lead a lifetime of learning and betterment of my craft, no matter where I arrive.
